Mission and Objectives

Computer Science Mission Statement: To offer a computer science education consistent with biblical truth, which equips students with the skills and values necessary to honor God in a computer-related profession.

Educational Objectives

The Elmer W. Engstrom Department of Engineering and Computer Science educational objectives define God-honoring characteristics of our students three to five years after graduation from Cedarville University.

  1. They are successful in a profession related to their field of study.
  2. They are prepared for graduate-level education programs.
  3. They continue to develop professionally and remain current in their field.
  4. They make sound professional and ethical decisions based upon Biblical truths.
  5. They actively serve in and support Christian ministries, both in their communities and around the world.

Expected Program Outcomes

  1. Knowledge and Application - By graduation, CS students demonstrate a breadth and depth of knowledge in their field and a maturity in current industry-standard programming languages and tools to posture them for success in computer-related professions or graduate studies in CS.
  2. Problem-Solving - By graduation, CS students can apply proven problem-solving strategies and principles to analyze requirements, design alternatives for constrained problems, and implement and test suitable solutions for a wide array of complex computing applications using fundamental algorithms, data structures, and programming logic.
  3. Software Engineering - By graduation, CS students can be self-learning, team-oriented members of managed software projects encompassing all phases of the software development cycle.
  4. Teamwork - By graduation, CS students work cooperatively and effectively within group and team situations.
  5. Communication - By graduation, CS students effectively communicate information and ideas both orally and through writing.
  6. Ethics - By graduation, CS students understand common ethical issues related to their profession and are prepared to make sound ethical decisions based upon solid Biblical principles and professional business practices.
  7. Professional Development - By graduation, CS students recognize the importance of continued attention to maintaining currency within their discipline and strive to participate in activities which enhance professional development.
  8. Societal Responsibility - By graduation, CS students have an ability to analyze how their profession impacts society and demonstrate a servant-minded attitude in applying their professional skills for the benefit of others.
